OCR: Theophrastus, a student of Aristotle, asserted that fossils are not remnants of organic life but spontaneous creations of nature that merely "imitate" organic life. Leonardo rejects this theory out of hand, giving it no more than a marginal note. He cites the "stupidity and ignorance of those who imagine that these creatures were carried by the Deluge to such places distant from the sea" and criticizes "another set of ignoramuses" for thinking that "nature or the heavens have created them in these places through celestial influences."
